Recently reported in Variety, was some film news that got gamers and film fans very excited. It’s been reported that mega film talent, Michael Fassbender, will produce a film version of the incredibly popular videogame Assassin’s Creed.
Don’t get too excited yet though. Video game adaptations have proven to be hit and miss in the past – just look at Tomb Raider, which despite staring Angelina Jolie as the very popular Lara Croft, failed to really make a lasting mark. Fassbender is expected to co-produce the adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, with Ubisoft Motion Pictures, and it’s rumoured that he’s also set to take the lead role of Desmond Miles. Fassbender impressed critics and film audiences alike with films including Shame, Prometheus and Ridley Scott’s The Counselor. He’s on top of his game at the moment and it looks like he could certainly be the man to buck the trend for videogame adaptations.
The Assassin’s Creed film definitely has the potential to become a franchise and will certainly attract audiences from the gaming community and wider public alike. Will this film live up to the hype? With Fassbender involved it looks like it definitely has potential, but it’s unlikely to be out before 2014, so there’s quite some time to wait and anticipate.
