Tim Burton is the king of quirky gothic cinema, having produced some wonderfully garish classics such as Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissor Hands. Burton possesses the ability to cast spells on audiences, transporting them into his own unique and eccentric world, like a cinematic wizard. However, some of his more recent films have received mixed reviews. Corpse Bride was amusing and very beautiful but felt a little plodding at times, especially when compared to the sensual delights found in A Nightmare Before Christmas, while Alice in Wonderland was a lot of fun but felt slightly over polished. Sweeney Todd was again visually stunning but the story lacked that Burton magic we’d all grown to love. So this raises the question; is his latest offering a return to former glory?
