Taylor Lautner Career
Taylor Lautner had small roles in TV shows and commercials in his first years in Los Angeles, as well as voice acting in animation films (What’s New, Scooby-Doo?, Duck Dodgers). His first and most prominent movie role came in 2005 when he starred alongside Taylor Dooley in Robert Rodriguez’s The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3D.
In the film, Rodriguez allowed the teen to direct all the fight scenes after finding out about his athletic abilities through karate classes. In spite of the film’s failure at the box office, Lautner was nominated for the Young Actor Award (the award went to the 14-year-old Josh Hutcherson, who is the future star of Hunger Games).
In the early 2000s, Lautner appeared in the adventure comedy Cheaper by the Dozen – 2. The film received heavy criticism and was regarded as one of the worst of the decade. However, Lautner was more successful in the drama series My Own Worst Enemy (2008), in which he portrayed the son of Christian Slater’s character.
There were a number of roles that Taylor was getting that were of a similar nature. According to Rolling Stone, Lautner’s early roles were either those of a popular guy, an athlete, or a bully. All that changed in 2008, when the actor auditioned for the role of Bella Swan’s friend in the film Twilight based on Stephanie Meyer’s novel of the same name. In spite of the fact that Lautner had never heard anything about this book, the agent convinced him to attend the casting call.
According to the producers, Lautner’s acting was satisfactory, and he was selected to portray Jacob Black, a native American from the tribe of Quiletes who has the ability to transform into a werewolf. As part of the romantic saga about vampires and werewolves, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart played other roles.
During its first week of release, the film earned $392 million worldwide. During the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, Lautner was nominated for the Actor’s Breakthrough: Men Award, but the honor was awarded to his colleague Robert Pattinson instead.
